Summary of Position: 

The Intervale Center seeks a dynamic, mission-driven Farm Business Specialist to join our team in Burlington, Vermont. For 30 years, the Intervale Center has led a community food revolution that sustains farms, land and people. We have pioneered farm and food innovations like Community Supported Agriculture, commercial composting, riparian restoration, farm business incubation, gleaning and food hub development. 

The Farm Business Specialist will implement the Center’s beginning farmer and land access programs. They will assist in coordination of the Intervale Center’s land leasing program and provide beginning farmer coaching and business planning assistance to farms across Vermont. This position will also manage the Vermont Land Link website and provide land access assistance to farmers and landowners.

Minimum Qualifications:

We are seeking a highly qualified professional to provide business planning and land access support to beginning farmers throughout Vermont. An ideal candidate will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural development, economics, community development or related field, or equivalent experience. Advanced training in farm business management, economics, or small business development desirable.
  • Experience working directly with farmers required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience involving agricultural or business development.
  • Experience managing a farm business is highly desirable.
  • High competency in and comfort with being a coach and mentor.
  • Enthusiasm about entrepreneurial business development.
  • Excellent budget and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage time and multiple clients, and problem-solve.
  • Experience with farm financial planning preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A passion for agriculture and knowledge of diverse farm production models.
  • A valid driver’s license and vehicle for travel.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assist and coach beginning farmers in the development and implementation of business, marketing and production plans.
  • Enroll farmer participants, provide on-farm consultation, coordinate consultants, and support or lead business plan development and follow-up support.
  • Collaborate with our team and other service providers on business coaching, planning, and special projects related to growing the agricultural sector.
  • Manage Vermont Land Link.
  • Provide assistance to farmland owners seeking to make their land available for agriculture through lease or purchase.
  • Assist in program development, evaluation and monitoring.
  • Coordinate Intervale Center’s land leasing.
  • Manage recruitment and enrollment of new farm tenants and conduct program outreach at meetings and events.
  • Represent and share the Intervale Center’s land leasing and farm business development services in Vermont and nationally as required.
  • Participate in professional development and networking opportunities throughout Vermont and the Northeast to enhance service delivery and help advance Vermont’s goal of a strong farm and food economy.
