Organizational Description

New Entry Sustainable Farming Project’s (New Entry) mission is to improve our local and regional food systems by training the next generation of farmers to produce food that is sustainable, nutritious and culturally appropriate and making this food accessible to individuals regardless of age, mobility, ethnicity or socio-economic status.  In doing this work, New Entry provides critical training, career development, and economic opportunity to new farmers.

World PEAS Food Hub is a project of New Entry. Our Food Hub embodies a unique relationship between producers and consumers, which benefits consumers, small-scale limited-resource farmers, local communities, and the environment. New Entry is a fiscally sponsored project of Third Sector New England.

Job Overview

This position will assist in operations of the World PEAS Food Hub, a local food aggregation facility in Lowell, MA. Responsibilities include assisting in operations and delivery of a 300 plus member, multi-farm Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and as well as variety of wholesale accounts providing fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables to customers around the Boston area.

Essential Job Functions

The candidate will support the Food Hub Coordinator with the following tasks:

  • Pickup produce from area farms;
  • Assist in packing produce in proper volumes for each market;
  • Assist in assessing produce quality before and during packing and work with the WPFH coordinator to provide feedback to farmers;
  • Deliver CSA shares and other produce orders to 20+ locations per week in the Lowell/Boston area;
  • Work with site coordinators and volunteers at various pick-up locations to trouble shoot delivery or pickup concerns;
  • Provide customer service to CSA shareholders at pick-up locations;
  • Monitor operational needs of delivery vehicle (gas, oil, windshield-wiper fluid) and schedule maintenance;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Special requirements:

  • Ability to perform varied and repetitive warehouse tasks including manual lifting of boxes between 25 – 50 pounds, in conditions that vary from hot and humid, to cold and wet, and up and down stairs;
  • Ability to work varied hours, including some evenings and weekends;
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record; Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Delivery experience required;
  • Experience handling produce and assessing produce quality. Previous experience in commercial farming or wholesaling preferred;
  • Experience driving a box truck in an urban setting preferred;
  • Customer service experience;
  • Community organizing and cross-cultural experience helpful;
  • Friendly, reliable, high energy level, comfortable with multi-tasking;
  • Good interpersonal skills; team player, ability to interact with diverse personalities; tactful, respectful, flexible;
  • Experience working with and leading groups of volunteers preferred;
  • Good reasoning abilities and sound judgment;
  • Self-motivated and directed; ability to work well within a rapidly-changing environment;
  • Access to reliable private transportation required;
