Description

The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board’s Farm & Forest Viability Program is seeking an intern for the winter of 2019. The Viability Program provides business planning to Vermont farm, food, and forestry businesses in order to enhance the long-term economic viability of Vermont’s working landscape. Farmers and other business owners face many challenges to operating in today’s changing economy, but the success of these businesses can be enhanced by sound decision making, superior management skills, and production expertise. Participants in the program work one-on-one with a business planner who helps them make improvements in their business management, profitability, and production efficiency.

The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board is seeking an intern to work with the Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program. Specific projects will include the following:

  • Data entry and data evaluation for Viability Program clients
  • Conducting program evaluation for previously enrolled clients, including online surveys and phone interviews
  • Improving Viability Program client applications and welcome packet
  • Phone interviews or site visits with farms, including interviews, photography, and video
  • Writing articles, newsletters, or blog posts

The intern will be responsible for keeping track of complex sets of data, working with a variety of individuals at the organization, communicating with farmers and forest products businesses, conducting interviews, and creating reports and articles based on those interviews. Intern may also work on projects with other programs at the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board as needed.

Strong data management, attention to detail, organization, excel skills, communication, and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work independently will be crucial! Applicants should have experience working in agriculture or food systems. Individuals with any of the following proficiencies would be a particularly good match: excel and data analysis, database software, photography, digital media/videography, or graphic design.

Compensation This is a temporary, part-time position. Hours for the position are flexible: 16-32 hours a week for 8-16 weeks. Wage: $10.78/hour. Valid driver’s license and personal transportation are preferred; business mileage will be reimbursed.
