This position is based out of the Foodbank’s Barre location. Each week, this position will require approximately 3 days in the Barre office working on administrative, reporting, evaluation, data analysis and additional program needs and will require approximately 2 days traveling from Barre to the Greater Burlington Area to implement cooking demos/tastings at food shelves and support gleaning activities on area farms and other program activities. On occasion, additional statewide travel will be required. Mileage reimbursement will be provided when utilizing a personal vehicle.

The Community Impact Programs Specialist (CIPS) is primarily responsible for supporting the administrative needs of the Vermont Foodbank’s (VFB) community health and fresh food programs including but not limited to VT Fresh, Community Kitchen Academy, the Gleaning Program, Pick for your Neighbor and Vermonters Feeding Vermonters. The (CIPS) will work closely with the Director of Community Health and Fresh Food Initiatives to meet the needs of these community-based programs and initiatives to promote community wellness as it relates to access to fresh produce, nutrition and health education, and food security. It is the responsibility of this position to perform a variety of administrative tasks related to program development, planning, and evaluation. This position will also implement program activities in the community including conducting gleaning activities on farms and delivering nutrition education and cooking demonstrations at community food shelves. Organization promotion and Network Partner outreach & visits will be a part of this position as time permits. This is a unique position that involves frequent office and computer work along with physically demanding activities of lifting, bending, pushing and pulling in all types of weather. Must be comfortable driving a company pick-up truck.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively and be able to communicatewith staff and volunteers to support the mission of the Foodbank to meet and sustain Foodbank goals.
  • Positively contribute to an organizational culture of safe and secure food handling, warehousing and distribution.

  • Assist with the evaluation of community health programs including administering evaluations, tracking implementation, documenting and recording impacts, data entry, spread sheet management and reporting results.
  • Administer VT Fresh mini-grants to partnering food shelves and meal sites in order to accomplish goals around improving the food/nutrition environment of these community spaces through food displays, storage, point of decision promotions and signage.
  • Manage program supplies including purchasing, inventory, distribution and utilization.
  • Help administer standard procedures for accessing state funding for CKA and other programs.
  • Monitor and track progress in meeting the requirements and deliverable of state grants and other partnership agreements.
  • Support the recruitment, follow-up communication and job retention tracking for CKA students.
  • Support the recruitment of gleaning volunteers, including scheduling, communication and tracking of volunteer hours and paperwork.
  • Implement VT Fresh cooking demonstrations and taste tests at partnering food shelves approximately once per week to help meet the fresh food needs of partners.  Includes working collaboratively with the Operations team to help meet the fresh food needs of VT Fresh partners.
  • Assist with food rescue, both the gleaning/harvesting and pickup of produce on regional farms and orchards including physically leading gleaning activities approximately one day per week between June-November.

Coordinate gleans, including communicating with farmers, volunteers, and warehouse personnel around scheduling, and also manage the activities in the field.

  • Adhere to all safety issues affecting the movement and handling of food.
  • Work closely with Network Partners, Network Relations Manager, and Chief Community Impact Officer assisting with outreach efforts and annual visits as needed.
  • Engage in community events, as an opportunity for networking, volunteer recruiting, and promotion.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Exceptional administrative skills required including multi-tasking, attention to detail, a good problem solver and organized.
  • Experience with food safety, cooking and nutrition education required.
  • Knowledge of farming practices and produce handling desired.  

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people, work in partnership with other staff and juggle many projects while meeting deadlines. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to successfully communicate with the general public, co-workers, partners, farmers and volunteers.
  • The individual must be self-motivated and committed to being part of a team
  • The individual must understand and agree with the vision and mission of the Vermont Foodbank and be committed to providing services to people facing situations of hunger and poverty.
  • Some nights and weekends may be required on occasion.
  • Must be able to lift 40-50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive a pickup truck.

Language Skills:

  • Excellent communication, writing, phone and public relations skills. 

Technical/Computer Skills:

  • Excellent computer literacy including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. High level of proficiency if Microsoft Excel required.


  • A valid Vermont Driver’s License.
  • 3-year motor vehicle report (MVR) showing a clean driving record.
  • ServSafe Certification or the ability to acquire this.
