Organizational Description:  The Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association (VMSMA) is a non-profit agricultural membership organization organized in 1893. Located in Vermont, it is one of the oldest agricultural organizations in the United States. The organization works to use its collective purchasing power to provide a variety of benefits for its members. VMSMA’s mission is to protect the tradition of maple sugaring while maintaining the highest standards of production and product quality.  To identify and study problems and issues that relate to the industry and to set in motion actions to resolve these. To provide educational programming and materials to the general public and the agricultural community with regard to current information, research and advancements relating to maple and maple production, coordinate industry wide marketing and promotional efforts to support the Vermont Maple Brand, as well as encouraging greater use of Vermont produced and packed maple products within the State as well as in outside markets.

Position Summary: The Executive Director is a full-time position that reports to the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association Board of Directors and works with its Executive Committee, together being responsible for the overall management and day to day operations of the organization. The Executive Director will oversee that the organization consistently achieves its financial, marketing, educational and promotional objectives. Directly supervises one employee, a Communications Director.

Major Job Functions and Responsibilities with approximate percentage of time needed:

  • Assure that the organization has short and long-range strategies which achieve its mission, yearly goals and towards which it makes consistent timely progress. [20%]

  • Develop a comprehensive communications plan that consistently engages and informs the Board of Directors, staff, membership and other Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association stakeholders. [20%]

  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative collaborations with all groups, other organizations and agencies with which Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association partners and research the possibilities and benefits of other potential partnerships. [10%]

  • Work closely with an Industry Committee to monitor relevant existing and proposed local, state and federal legislation affecting common interest developments and lead advocacy efforts for policies beneficial to the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association’s membership and the Vermont maple industry as a whole. [5%]

  • Participate in and promote active, cooperative and broad participation by membership and other volunteers in all areas of the Association’s work. Set plans in motion to increase membership. [15%]

  • Serve as Association and Vermont maple industry spokesperson presenting a united front to the media, the public and all stakeholders and partners throughout the State and beyond on issues and opportunities affecting the Vermont maple industry. [5%]

  • Attend major functions that may involve some weekend and evening hours along with travel in Vermont and occasionally outside the State. [10%]

  • Work to increase the organization’s visibility through all forms of media and social media. Work with others in the association maintaining and making updates to the organization’s website, vermontmaple.org. [10%]

  • Write grants and initiate fundraising opportunities to fund projects, create proactive marketing initiatives and work out an overall plan that will lead VMSMA towards financial sustainability. Work with the Board in developing an annual budget. [5%]

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Requirements:

  • Position requires a love for our product—pure Vermont maple syrup.

  • The job involves a fast paced, high energy environment with the need to balance multiple priorities, projects and responsibilities.

  • A preference of at least 3-5 years experience in an executive level management position which included experience with a +500 membership based non profit board governed organization. Experience in Agriculture and knowledge of agricultural based organizations preferred.

  • Bachelors Degree with Business Management and/or Marketing emphasis preferred. Knowledge of Food Safety programs and ability to mange regulatory updates at State and Federal levels ideal.

  • Collaborative, inclusive and transparent leadership approach with experience coordinating and working with volunteers. Creative, personable and energetic team player who also possesses the ability to work independently exercising good judgment, decision making and problem solving skills.

  • Proven grant writing and financial management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a variety of forms of communication (written, email, in person, public speaking, etc.). Should feel comfortable communicating with diverse audiences and stakeholders (members, international, media, political, etc.)

  • Strong knowledge of web based systems to enhance the functions of the organization and it’s existing website.  Well versed in all aspects of social media will be a plus.

  • Well organized with strong time management skills. Ability to train, motivate and provide performance feedback to employees.

  • Should be diplomatic, but not political, with the ability to clarify and resolve issues and the ability to negotiate contentious issues.

  • Financial experience with yearly budgets as well as finding additional funding sources for revenue diversification and fund raising that will lead the Association towards financial sustainability.

  • Legislative assessment and advocacy experience would be an asset.
