I work as a private consultant for biotech and start-up companies, bringing together my scientific domain expertise in the life sciences and computational and statistical skills, to tackle data-intensive projects. I am interested in joining efforts to solve grand challenges at the juncture of data science, preservation of natural resources, climate change, sustainability, and social issues related to local farming development, food distribution, and poverty. Currently, I want to work with people concerned with low environmental footprint farming, local food production, and sustainable economic development. I would like to help in trying to identify gaps between the skills needed to attain these goals and those available out there. I want to take part and get involved in studies in any sector of the food system both hands-on field work and studying/analyzing new strategies. I would like to move to Vermont, be “rooted in Vermont”, and work there because Vermont is pursuing all these important goals head-on.

SUMMARY I am originally from Spain. My background is in medicine, nutrition, neuroscience, and data analytics. After graduating from medical school, I came to MIT (in 1982) as a research associate in the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences (later, Applied Biological Sciences). Within several months and while doing research on neurotransmitter precursors in foods and brain metabolism, I was offered to stay at MIT and enroll in a PhD program in the Department of Brain and Cognitive sciences, where I graduated in 1989. After graduation, I joined the faculty at Boston University School of Medicine as a research associate and, later, as assistant professor, until 2011. During this time I continue research in the areas of neuronal development and regeneration, neurotransmitter specification, and the study of basic models of neurodegenerative disorders. In addition, I taught signal transduction mechanisms to graduate students and pre-medical students. Following my departure from BU, I took a sabbatical of nine months as a resident at the School of Visual Arts in New York City to fulfill a long deferred ambition to study art, specializing in oil painting. Immediately after, through connections with art faculty at various universities and my experience with data analytics and programming skills, I was hired by East Carolina University as Associate Director of Marketing and Finance for a study abroad program in Florence, Italy. In this position, I worked in the school program budget and marketing synchronizing all financial transactions between the university administration and their Italian counterpart and, also, I developed experience in data acquisition and integration and business data analytics. Since then, I have taken various courses on-line related to data science, statistical learning, and predictive analytics. Currently, I work as a private consultant for biotech and start-up companies, bringing together my scientific domain expertise in the life sciences and computational and statistical skills, to tackle data-intensive projects. I am interested in joining efforts to solve grand challenges at the juncture of data science, preservation of natural resources, climate change, sustainability, and social issues related to local farming development, food distribution, and poverty. I want to work with people concerned with similar subjects, transforming data analytics into evidence-based projects with impacts and solutions to concrete questions and the betterment of local communities.
