Joe was raised on a small family farm in Pennsylvania. His livestock experience includes managing sheep farms in New York, butchering, genetic evaluation, teaching, and judging. His research has focused on using ultrasound for genetic improvement of lamb composition, and on evaluating pasture-based beef systems. Joe seeks to help Vermont's diversified livestock farms and industries improve their efficiency, product quality, and marketing.

The mission of the University of Vermont Extension Northwest Crops and Soils Team is to provide the best and most relevant cropping information, both research-based and experiential, delivered in the most practical and understandable ways to Vermont farmers. In addition to the 3,000 research plots at Borderview Research Farm, we collaborate with farmers on projects throughout Vermont, New England and New York. We organize and collaborate on several farm field days and conferences throughout the year to share the information.

I am the Vermont coordinator for the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program (NE-SARE) where I provide outreach on our competitive grants program and organize sustainable agriculture trainings for agricultural service providers. I also work for the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension's Northwest Crops & Soils Program where I am working on a national project called eOrganic to publish peer-reviewed certified organic information online.
