North Bennington, VT
John Williamson of State Line Bio-Fuels is one of the state's pioneer oilseed producers and is now eight years into on-farm fuel processing. In 2004, the Williamsons' family dairy operation was converted into more diversified crops and has grown sunflowers, spring and winter canola, soybeans, camelina, flax, crambe and other crops. John will share his experiences both on the production and the processing ends of his ever-changing operation.
UVM Extension Agronomist Heather Darby will share information on agronomic management and answer questions about the production of oilseed crops in the region. Extension Crops and Soils Coordinator Hannah Harwood will share results from the 2012 National Sunflower Survey, as well as research on altering planting dates to mitigate bird and insect damage. Entomologist Scott Lewins will discuss Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in oilseed crops, as well as presenting the results of this year's sunflower insect monitoring projects across the state.
