On Saturday, July 9th, regenerative agriculture innovator Darren Doherty, director of Australia-based Regrarians Ltd., and Seth Itzkan, co-founder of Soil4Climate, a Vermont-based soil advocacy nonprofit, will present “Soil, Carbon, and Climate: The Solution Below our Feet” in Common House on the Sterling College campus. This presentation begins at 4:30 PM, and is free and open to the public.
Agricultural land use contributes 12 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and in the United States, the food system contributes nearly 20 percent of the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. With such sobering statistics, how can agriculture be an ally in the climate movement?
The answer, says Doherty, is right under our feet. Doherty will share working examples of agricultural systems from around the world that promote carbon storage in the soil as well as profitability. He will also focus on the design and management practices that make these systems successful and connect them to the larger economic and political system needed to support them. Itzkan will discuss scientific and political developments in soil’s role as a climate solution.
Doherty has extensive experience across the world in project design, development, management and training. A career-long focus on the profitable and regenerative retrofit of broadacre landscapes has seen Doherty acclaimed as a pioneer in this important and often overlooked field. With the advent of the Regrarians Ltd. non-profit in 2013, he has shifted his service profile to being that of a volunteer of that organization, and is a leading attendee at conventions and conferences organized in conjunction with local organisations and individuals all over the globe. He is the originator of the Regrarians Platform process which outlines a strategic and logical process to the development of regenerative agricultural systems, and is the program extensively outlined in the Regrarians Handbook, which is now being released chapter by chapter as an eBook.
Soil4Climate advocates for soil restoration to help reverse global warming. It promotes regenerative land management practices to capture atmospheric carbon and encourages collaboration within the larger body of climate activism.
The vibrant working landscape of Vermont has been the inspiration for Sterling College’s curriculum for a half century.
