Farm to School enriches the connection communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by changing food purchasing and education practices at schools. Students gain access to healthy, local foods as well as education opportunities such as school gardens, cooking lessons, and farm field trips. Farm to School empowers children and their families to make informed food choices while strengthening the local economy and contributing to vibrant communities.

Position Overview

The West River Education District seeks an experienced educator to support school garden programs at NewBrook Elementary School. The Farm to School Coordinator will maintain the school garden in spring and fall, using the garden as a tool for reinforcing classroom concepts. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Farm to School committee, the food service manager, and local farmers to foster a positive school nutrition environment by supporting the use of fresh, local food in the cafeteria, integrating nutrition education curriculum into classroom experiences, and cultivating interactions between local farmers and the community. The West River Education District seeks someone who can help create a model for garden programming that is replicable throughout the district. 

Teaching responsibilities 

  • During the school year, plan and run weekly cooking/gardening/Farm to School lessons with classes K-5.
  • Utilize the Ladder of Responsibility, created by the NewBrook School staff, to guide instruction through the grades and help integrate sustainability throughout the school. 
  • Work with teachers to incorporate food growing and cooking activities in the classroom. 
  • Support initiatives already in place, such as NewBrook’s annual Farm & Field Day, Harvest Dinner, and the Harvest of the Month taste test program.

Communication expectations 

  • Participate in the Farm to School committee on a regular basis. 
  • Log garden activities for Farm to School team and school to reference using Google Docs.
  • Farm to School Coordinator will be directly supported by NewBrook’s Farm to School Committee, led by Heather Sperling.
  • Work with the Farm to School committee to identify and pursue grants.

Skills needed

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with a variety of people
  • Strong public speaking and writing skills
  • Organization and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to locate resources in an efficient manner
  • Knowledge of local food system and sustainable agriculture a plus
  • Knowledge of Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards a plus
  • Grant-writing and fundraising experience a plus
