The Intervale Center seeks a dynamic, mission-driven part-time (16 hours/week, May through October 31st, 2020) People’s Farm and Gleaning Assistant to join our team in Burlington, Vermont. For over 30 years, the Intervale Center has led a community food revolution that sustains farms, land, and people. We have pioneered farm and food innovations like Community Supported Agriculture, commercial composting, riparian restoration, farm business incubation, gleaning and food hub development.

Summary of Position:

The position of People’s Farm and Gleaning Assistant provides the opportunity to work alongside both the Land Stewardship team and the Gleaning and Food Rescue team. This position will work in all aspects of People’s Garden and Farm maintenance. Additionally, they will support staff in the Abenaki Heritage Garden, support harvest and gleaning initiatives including the Fair Share program and help to lead volunteers in both harvest and farming activities. The People’s Garden and Farm provide variety and Pick-Your-Own options to members of the Intervale Center Fair Share, a free CSA option for community members experiencing hunger.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Support the People’s Garden and Farm with various farm tasks including mulching, weeding, watering, trellising, pruning, etc.

  • Assist in maintenance of irrigation systems and fencing

  • Participate in planting crops, including transplanting and direct seeding

  • Demonstrate and maintain safe work environments when leading volunteers in farm tasks such as weeding and harvest

  • Support harvest each week at the People’s Farm and gleaning on other Intervale farms

  • Support the Fair Share in packing shares on Monday afternoons

  • Be a consistent, friendly, and approachable person at weekly pick-ups

  • Ensure product quality and food safety (ex: keep gleaned product in the shade, pack harvest totes correctly)

  • Keep track of all gleaning supplies and sanitize regularly: harvest totes, first aid kit, gleaning binder, harvest knives

  • Represent the farm, garden, and Intervale Center in a professional and courteous manner

  • Work alongside community partners to create an inviting and educational environment 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Experience in gardening, farming, horticulture and/or landscaping

  • Passion for and experience with community gardening, food access and/or indigenous food crops

  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a team

  • Accustomed to physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions

  • Strong organization, communication, and time management skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Experience working with volunteers and/or diverse populations

  • Positive, outgoing attitude

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

  • Valid driver’s license and experience driving farm trucks preferred

  • Flexible schedule and the ability to work occasional weekends are a plus
