Education Child Nutrition Consultant (Summer Food Service Program Reviews) (Vermont Agency of Education)

Organization Vermont Agency of Education
Location 219 North Main Street, Ste. 402
Barre, VT 05641

This is a temporary, part-time position conducting reviews of Summer Food Service Programs around the state during Summer 2019.  The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally-funded, state-administered program to provide meals to children ages 0-18 while school is out of session during the summer months.  Schools, local government agencies, camps, faith-based and other non-profit community organizations all sponsor sites around the state.  Sites are generally located at schools, libraries, parks, community centers, summer camps, and other places where children may congregate during the summer.

For each review, the Consultant will do an on-site visit to observe the program and provide technical assistance, then write a report summarizing the visit and noting any findings, recommendations, and required corrective actions.  The review checks for compliance with the SFSP program regulations, including food safety, meal pattern (foods and portions offered), and correct counting and claiming of meals for reimbursement.  Once the program sponsor has responded to the report, the Consultant will review submitted corrective actions and write follow-up or closure letters to complete the review.

Extensive travel around the state is required.  The consultant will work an average of 1-2 days per week, depending on when programs to be reviewed are in operation.  The Consultant may also assist with approving sponsor applications, providing training, and compiling data for required federal reporting.

Preferred qualifications include experience with the Summer Food Service Program, federal child nutrition programs generally, food safety, and providing training and technical assistance.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree AND four 4 years or more of professional level work experience in child nutrition programs. OR Associate's degree or higher in culinary arts AND four 4 years or more of professional level work in the field of child nutrition programs or food service management. OR Master's degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, or food service management. Note: Some positions may have certification requirements or other special requirements
