The Program Assistant is a 7-month long, part-time position to support the Vermont Community Garden Network through the growing season from March to October. The Program Assistant will work directly with the Garden Education Manager to run the Community Teaching Garden Course and coordinate garden education programming at affordable housing sites. The ideal candidate has previous gardening or farming experience and an interest in gaining experience with garden education and community-based work.

Primary Responsibilities – Community Teaching Garden Course

  • Attend all weekly classes for the Beginner and Advanced Courses to support the Lead Teacher and students.  Please see below for the weekly schedule.
  • Facilitate weekly work days for students in the Beginner and Advanced Courses
  • Assist with class prep, which often involves purchasing, transporting, and setting up garden-related materials
  • Supervise volunteers during work shifts at garden sites
  • Participate in garden maintenance work as needed throughout the growing season
  • Assist with documentation, including garden logs, photographs, and social media

Secondary Responsibilities – Garden Education Programming at Affordable Housing Sites

  • Co-facilitate programming at seven affordable housing sites located in Chittenden County, including garden opening/closing days and bi-weekly “Open Garden” hour at each site.  Please see below for the weekly schedule.
  • Supervise interns who will be supporting programming during June, July, and August
  • Participate in garden maintenance work as needed throughout the growing season
  • Establish communication and technical support materials to regularly engage with resident gardeners
  • Assist with documentation and reporting requirements throughout the season
