JOB DESCRIPTION:  Full-time Bookkeeper / Business Manager


Reports to: Finance Director
General Work Experience: 1-3 years of non-profit and/or for-profit bookkeeping or finance experience
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Management or a related field.

We accelerate sustainable economic development by providing business assistancevalue chain facilitationnetwork development, and strategic planning in agriculture and food systemsforest productswaste managementrenewable energy, and environmental technology sectors.


The Business Manager will be responsible for a combination of bookkeeping, contracts management, and human resources support tasks. The Business Manager should have financial skills and experience, accounting knowledge, familiarity with financial software applications, and an active commitment to the values of the organization. The Business Manager will also be involved in a range of strategic planning and internal initiatives with the rest of the VSJF staff. This is a non-exempt, full-time (32-40 hours/week), permanent position, reporting to the Finance Director.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Bookkeeping

    • General bookkeeping
    • Payroll and annual audit support, as needed
    • Compile documentation for annual workers’ compensation audit and contractor 1099s
    • Compile documentation for federal grant reimbursements and produce financial reports
  • Human Resources Support

    • Benefits management (health, dental, etc.)
    • New hire documentation management
  • Contract / Vendor Management

    • Lead and manage all vendor contracts, client agreements and grantee agreements from start to finish
  • Flexible Capital Fund – Fund Management Support Tasks

    • General bookkeeping and month end closing
    • Accounts Receivable / Accounts Payable and liaison with loan servicing contractor
    • Support annual distribution check process
    • Administrative support related to investor relations, such as Schedule K-1 mailings to investors


  • Other Duties

    • Manage conflict of interest policy and disclosures with board and staff annually
    • Maintain office supplies
    • Collaborate with VSJF staff to forward the organization’s work and mission


Core Competencies and Qualifications:


  • Financial Management software – NetSuite and QuickBooks preferred
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Proficient data and file management skills
  • Some knowledge of VSJF primary areas of focus (i.e., food system, forest products, waste management, renewable energy, and environmental technology economic sectors) is a plus

Compensation This is a full-time, permanent, non-exempt position. Salary will be commensurate with experience and available funding, within the range of $25 – $285/hour. Employee health and dental insurance, paid time off, plus up to 3% SIMPLE IRA retirement contribution. This position will be a combination of remote and in-office work.
