Vermont Open Farm Week Celebrates 5 years - August 9-15
Farms welcome the public to dig into Vermont’s agricultural economy
MONTPELIER, VT – For the fifth consecutive year, farmers across Vermont will once again open their barn doors and garden gates to welcome the public for a behind-the-scenes look at Vermont’s vibrant working landscapes. Vermont Open Farm Week 2019 will be held Friday, Aug. 9 through Thursday, Aug. 15, and feature over 72 events at over 40 farms across the state. Events are live and sorted by day and location on DigInVT.com.
Open Farm Week is a celebration of Vermont farms offering visitors a backstage pass to learn more about local food origins, authentic agritourism experiences, and the chance to build relationships with local farmers. Activities vary and include chances to milk cows and goats, harvest vegetables, learn to make cheese, go on behind- the-scenes farm tours, enjoy an on-farm dinners with live music, and more! Each Open Farm Week event is created by a farmer and focused on highlighting the unique character of the host farm. Below are a few highlights for the 2019 schedule:
Snug Valley Farm Visit Snug Valley Farm for an evening pasture walk with the Nottermanns followed by a burger night at Snug Valley Farm in conjunction with Kingdom Farm & Food Days in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Sat. Aug. 10, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m., East Hardwick.
Homestead Hops and Norris Sugarworks: Stop in and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you take a walk through the trellised two-acre hop yard and take in the sights and smells of these majestic plants. Hogback Mountain Brewing, Hired Hand Brewing Co., Foam Brewers, and Lawson's Finest Liquids will be serving beer truly crafted with local ingredients. Thurs., Aug. 15, 4 p.m. - 8 p.m, Starksboro.
Philo Ridge Farm:Enjoy events all through the week. From farm tours, to kids activities to natural dyeing workshops, to bluegrass concerts, to cocktail garden parties with local spirits, the folks at Philo Ridge Farm invite the public to visit and experience the farm. Aug. 9 -14, Charlotte.
Open Farm Week events are live now! Many events are free and some require pre-registration. Not all farms are open every day, so be sure to visit DigInVT.com to explore the diverse event schedule and plan a visit. Open Farm Week is a collaborative statewide agritourism project organized by members of the Vermont Farm to Plate Network including City Market, DigInVT.com, Shelburne Farms and Farm‐Based Education, NOFA‐VT, University of Vermont Extension, Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Vermont Fresh Network, and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing. DigInVT.com is an online agritourism platform, run by a partnership of local nonprofit organizations, and virtual home to Open Farm Week.
