Katherine Oaks is the Global Energy LLM Fellow with the Institute for Energy and the Environment at Vermont Law School. As co-leader of the Farm and Energy Initiative, she and staff attorney Genevieve Byrne collaborate to develop dynamic, inclusive, and resilient clean energy systems and policy in agriculture nationwide. Katherine grounds her work in a civics of environmental stewardship, democratic values, and social justice. Katherine most recently hails from Philadelphia, PA where she earned her JD from Villanova Law School after obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Saint Joseph’s University. She spent the last three years at the Defender Association of Philadelphia, representing indigent people charged with crimes. As a public defender she strove to discover, respect, and voice the stories of those people most injured by unjust systems. Ecological thinking shaped Katherine’s approach as a criminal defense lawyer and is central to her vision as an environmental lawyer – to construct systemic change by incorporating local knowledge and perspective – by using not only the power of the law, but also ethnography, community-based research, and democratic values. Katherine is motivated by her belief that healing communities and climate requires the development of clean energy systems locally and globally, governed by policies and practices that reflect the interests of all stakeholders.

Orchard Grass Farm raises grass-fed White Dorper Sheep. We are located in New Haven, VT, and on these 47 acres we're trying to make a go of a small, sustainable farm. After working our way into the land for a few years, after some horses (9 years), the land spoke: Take me back to my beginnings, it said. Once a sheep farm, this land has returned to its roots.
