Farmland Access
The Farmland Access Network began in 2010 as a collaborative of five organizations and programs that focus on farmland access and stewardship in Vermont. The network works to uncover farmland tenure and business opportunities that might or might not be exposed on the open real estate market. The organizations within the network work directly with farm seekers to improve their chances for success once on the land, and work directly with landowners and retiring farmers searching for next generation farmers to continue Vermont's farming legacy. The Farmland Access Network manages the Vermont Land Link, an online tool to help match farmland seekers with farmland.

I grew up in rural upstate New York and moved to Vermont when I was in college. Throughout my 20s I worked on a variety of different farms, completed the apprenticeship in ecological horticulture at UC Santa Cruz, and farmed for myself for a few years on a rented farm. At 29 I began a graduate program in rural development. While working on my dissertation I fixed up an old farm in southeastern Vermont, but have not yet begun farming there in earnest. For the past two years I have been a visiting faculty member at New York University, where I teach about food systems. This spring I will be a visiting researcher at the Center for Rural Research in Norway. I am eager to settle back in Vermont and to get involved with all the good work that is going on building sustainable food systems here.

Orchard Grass Farm raises grass-fed White Dorper Sheep. We are located in New Haven, VT, and on these 47 acres we're trying to make a go of a small, sustainable farm. After working our way into the land for a few years, after some horses (9 years), the land spoke: Take me back to my beginnings, it said. Once a sheep farm, this land has returned to its roots.
