Rooted in Vermont®
Rooted in Vermont® is a grassroots movement to increase consumer demand for local food. By celebrating all Vermonters’ connections to local food, Rooted in Vermont intends to create a movement that connects tradition, pride, community, trust, and equity to local food. Grassroots marketing efforts targeted towards Vermonters not already committed to the local food movement will aim to stimulate increased awareness, participation, and purchases in Vermont’s local food economy and help local food consumption become mainstream in the next 5-10 years.
The Rooted in Vermont Task Force is responsible for implementing the tactics in the Rooted in Vermont grassroots marketing plan. The task force is comprised of social media and public relations professionals, Vermont consumers, and outreach professionals at organizations committed to implementing Rooted in Vermont campaign tactics.
Learn more about Rooted in Vermont at http://bit.ly/RootedinVermontMovement.
Check out the Rooted in Vermont Key Messages.
- Key Messages enable the Farm to Plate Network to communicate our common agenda to increase consumer demand for local food.
- Task force members are asked to keep key messages in mind when communicating (social media and editorial) so there can be consistency and amplification as we work together to encourage increased consumer demand for local food.

Happy Bird Poultry Farm, LLC started as two couples growing their own chicken. One year we (The Boyles) gave some of our homegrown chicken as gifts for Christmas and WOW! It was popular so we grew more and more each year. Then we added the smokehouse and farm market. We now offer a diverse variety of local food and non food items for sale. Our chicken is still grown here on the farm and is now (as of 2017) processed by us in our on farm VT Department of Agriculture inspected poultry processing plant. We aren't a deli or restaurant but we do offer some awesome foods for you to take home and share with family and friends. Real smoke, real flavor, low and slow!

I'm a new gourmet mushroom farmer located in White River Junction. We are cultivating a variety of oyster mushrooms, lions mane, maitake, shitake, pioppino, brick cap, and many more on the horizon. My buddy Jesse and I make it our mission to bring in a new level of sustainability to mushroom production by eliminating the use of non-recyclable plastic and lowering our energy use by utilizing inovative sterilization techniques. We are in the design stages of integrating mushroom production into a permaculture-based perrenial gardern.

We are a local Vermont based farm run by us, Robert and Nicolle and our very large and caring family. We traveled all the way from California to beautiful Vermont so we could live out our dream of owning a homestead and be self sufficient, in this process we decided to have a farm! Our key principles are sustainability and educating the community about our environment and how to implement our fowl into your everyday life. One goal is to preserve and sustain some of the endangered and near extinct breeds and showcase their uses. We are a welcoming environment and love teaching people.

As a Food Security & Advocacy at Hunger Free Vermont Phil provides integrated outreach and training on 3SquaresVT, a federal nutrition program that works to eliminate food insecurity in our state. In addition to training service providers who work directly with Vermonters in need of nutrition resources, Phil deploys targeted strategies to reach vulnerable populations such as college students, seniors, new Americans, and working families with young children. Phil works collaboratively with federal, state, and community partners to address barriers to participation and ensure all Vermonters gain access to the programs for which they are eligible. Phil graduated from the University of Vermont in 2012, yet has remained actively involved in his alma mater as an advisor to several of the organizations he was a member of as an undergraduate student, including Feel Good which is an anti-hunger organization on campus. This consistent contact with college students, and his understanding of the issue of hunger, has made him acutely aware of the growing issue of food insecurity in our college communities. He now leads Hunger Free Vermont’s effort to address this problem on a state level. Before joining Hunger Free Vermont, Phil worked in project coordination and sales at a few small, locally owned businesses in the Burlington area, putting his BA in Art History and Business Administration into practice. This background translates nicely to his work at Hunger Free Vermont where project coordination and relationship building is paramount, yet his current position also allows him to fulfill his passion for working in the anti-hunger field. A native to rural Vermont, Phil is proud to work toward a mission that is making a difference for his fellow Vermonters.

At Sel de la Terre, we work in cooking education, recipe development, journalism, and as consultants to support businesses that are part of sustainable food systems. We believe that in order to have healthy soil, healthy communities, and healthy bodies, we need agricultural operations, food service businesses, and consumers to be aligned in a commitment to thoughtfully-produced ingredients, and to the idea that eating joyfully, and ethically, is linked to overall wellness. To that end, we teach, we cook, and we collaborate with others who share our ideals. We're excited to work in Vermont, our home, and to connect with, and build roots in, other communities throughout the United States.

Dr. Margaret Skinner is a Research Professor and Extension Entomologist at the Univ. of Vermont, Entomology Research Lab, where she has worked for 36 years, conducting research on management of a wide array of insect pests in forests, vegetables and greenhouse ornamentals. Her current primary target pests are aphids in high-tunnel vegetables and western flower thrips in greenhouse ornamentals. She works on developing strategies to maximize the potential of insect-killing fungi and plant-mediated systems. As the UVM Extension Entomologist she assists professional growers and homeowners with pest id and IPM. She co-founded the North American Center for Saffron Research & Development, which seeks to develop the potential of this high-value crop to increase revenue generation options for small family farms through greater diversification.
