Barre Historical Society: Union Co-operative Store Bakery
PO Box 496 (48 Granite Street)
Barre, Vermont 05641

We are reviving a 1913 wood fired bakery built by Italian quarry workers so we can offer classes in baking bread with a wood fired oven. This will be offering a baking experience as well as providing a link to a vital part of our Vermont history.

I've been assisting the Barre Historical Society in working to reconstruct the Union Co-operative Store Bakery that is an integral part of Barre's granite and labor history. The wood fired bakery is adjacent to the Socialist Labor Party Hall both of which are on the Register of National Historic Buildings. Constructed in 1913 by the Italian granite workers, the original intent was to meet the increasing need for good bread in the Barre-Montpelier neighborhoods. We want to reconstruct the bakery to recreate a wood fired bakery that will be a part of the revitalization happening in Barre. It will be a place for people can come to attend workshops on wood fired baking and to learn more about the rich labor history of the area. I'm here on the porch of the bakery with two 90 year old Barre residents who were connected with the bakery.
