A collection of resources aimed at providing support for farmers, businesses and organizations in the food system during COVID-19.
Food facilities, like other work establishments, need to follow protocols set by local and state health departments, which may vary depending on the amount of community spread of COVID-19 in a particular area. We encourage coordination with health officials for all businesses so that timely and accurate information can guide appropriate responses in each location where they have operations.
In 2020, Farm to Plate will undertake a stakeholder engagement process to further refine and prioritize strategies and recommendations to develop a shared vision for the Farm to Plate 2.0 Strategic Plan. A list of high priority recommendations identified through the stakeholder process will be completed by September 2020, with results shared at the 2020 Farm to Plate Network Annual Gathering. The final synthesized report, with high priority strategies, recommendations, and vision statement, will be delivered to the Legislature January 2021 to officially commence Farm to Plate’s next 10-year cycle.
In response to the ongoing dairy crisis and other significant changes happening within Vermont’s agricultural and food sector, and a desire to stimulate more rural economic development as well as regional market access for Vermont products, the Legislature passed and Governor Scott signed Act 83 (S.160), an act relating to agricultural development, in May 2019. Section 1 of this Act calls for the development of a report with recommendations to stabilize and revitalize Vermont’s agricultural industry.

The report examines local food trends, provides tools and insights into how wholesale operates for producers and gives the broader food system community a greater understanding of how trends are impacting, supporting, and altering the viability, sustainability, and make-up of our local food system.

In the fall of 2012 University of Vermont Extension distributed a survey to independent grocers and cooperatively-owned grocery stores asking about chicken and egg demand in their stores with a focus on regionally- produced products. Follow-up phone interviews were conducted through the fall of 2013 to get additional feedback from the buyers in these stores. The goal of this work is to understand the demand for local poultry products and to also provide guidance for poultry farmers preparing to conduct their own market research.
Over the course of the 2016 season, 30 organic farms in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts tracked and analyzed their crop-specific costs of production. This factsheet presents lessons learned from their successes (and failures) in tracking the data needed to perform cost of production analysis.
