Mari grew up in the hills around Rutland. She spent two decades outside Vermont and worked at Conservation International and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. In 2007 she returned to Vermont with her partner Laura Olsen and launched Green Mountain Girls Farm where they raise happy and healthy meat, eggs, milk, vegetables and herbs and hosts visitors for events and farmstays.

The Thorny Issue of Farmer Pay

In spite of successes, we are struggling to make our small farm profitable—which often leads to increased stress and a sense of failure. We’re grateful that we’ve been able to finance our startup ourselves, but we recognize that most of our farmer colleagues don’t have such reserves.
