Attend the Big E: VAAFM Now Accepting Vendor Proposals
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets is now accepting proposals from Vermont businesses and organizations for vending and exhibiting space in the Vermont Building at the Eastern States Exposition (“Big E”) in West Springfield, Massachusetts. In 2015, the fair will be held from September 18th - October 4th. Nearly 1 million patrons passed through the Vermont Building during the 2014 fair, spending over $1.7 million on Vermont products. Employee garden grants for small businesses
The Vermont Department of Health and Vermont Community Garden Network are offering grants for small businesses to establish workplace food gardens. Green Thumbs at Work grantees will receive $500 for materials, a $250 Gardener’s Supply gift certificate, and garden planning support and technical assistance from horticulturalist Charlie Nardozzi and the Vermont Community Garden Network. The application deadline is Friday, Jan. 30, 2015. Read More

The Food and Farm Initiative of the Vermont Community Foundation Awards $280,000 In Grants to Connect More Vermonters with Healthy, Local Food
The Food and Farm Initiative of the Vermont Community Foundation has awarded eight grants totaling $280,000 to help more Vermont kids and families access the benefits of healthy, local food. The Foundation launched the Food and Farm Initiative in 2012, seeing an opportunity—and a need—to connect the state’s burgeoning local food movement with the fight against hunger. Since then, with the support of over 60 donors, the initiative has awarded more than $1 million in grants to create lasting links between organizations working on food security and local food. USDA Announces $50,000 Farm to School Grant for 2015 Farm to Institution Summit
The Northeast Regional Steering Committee of the National Farm to School Network has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the USDA to host a Northeast Farm to School Leadership Forum in partnership with Farm to Institution New England (FINE) and Farm to Institution New York State (FINYS) as an integral part of the Northeast Farm to Institution Summit. Sterling College is #1 in the Nation for Healthy, Fair, & Green College Food System
Sterling College, already known for growing 20% of its own food on campus, has been confirmed as the top college in the U.S. that eats food that is local, sustainable, humane, and fair-trade. This ranking comes from the Real Food Challenge, which surveyed over 160 colleges and universities throughout the U.S. After reviewing all of the food used in the Sterling College kitchen from June 2013 to June 2014, the college found that 76% of its food met the real food qualification for production methods. In comparison, the next-highest ranked institution eats only 34% real food. Read More
Registration Open for Healthy Food Access Workshop in Newport, VT
Please join a community conversation related to healthy food access for the Orleans and northern Essex area on Thursday, February 5, 2015, 5-9 PM at the North Country Career Center, Newport. Facilitated discussions will focus on nutrition education, gardening, food access and affordability, as well as the local food system and distribution. The workshop will consider the challenges and develop a plan to move forward to better meet the needs of all in Orleans/northern Essex counties for healthy food. All voices are welcome.
