VT Agency of Ag Now Accepting Vendor Applications for 2016 Eastern States Expo (“Big E”)
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) is now accepting proposals from Vermont businesses and organizations for vending and exhibiting space in the Vermont Building at the 2016 Eastern States Exposition (“The Big E”) in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The 2016 fair dates are September 16th – October 2nd. Approximately 1 million patrons passed through the Vermont Building during the 2015 Big E, spending nearly $1.7 million on Vermont products. Fairfax Farm Conserved and Sold to New Dairy Farmers
After farming their Fairfax land for more than 25 years, Walter and Diane Berthiaume decided to work with the Vermont Land Trust to conserve the property and find new farmers to buy the farm. When they first reached out to the Vermont Land Trust, they were interested in selling a conservation easement on the farm so that the land wouldn’t be subdivided for development. In conversations with the land trust, they learned how the organization’s Farmland Access program could also help them find the right farmer to buy the land. Read More
Root 5 Farm Conserves Land with Vermont Land Trust
At Root 5 Farm, Danielle and Ben grow certified organic vegetables. Their fields have top-quality sandy loam soil, perfect for growing produce. The couple stewards their soil with care by amending it with compost, rotating crops, and planting cover crops. "It's an honor to be able to farm on these soils and it's important to us to preserve this as a working farm for future generations,” said Danielle. “It's not every day that you have the opportunity to effect the future in such a positive way!" Merck Forest works with Vermont Land Trust to Permanently Protect Land
This season of giving has brought a lasting present to those who enjoy Vermont’s landscape of forests and farmland. The Merck Forest and Farmland Center worked in partnership with the Vermont Land Trust to permanently protect more than 2,600 acres in Rupert, bringing the total number of protected acres to approximately 3,000. The formal conservation of the land ensures that Merck Forest’s long tradition of land stewardship, education and recreation will be continued in perpetuity. Read More

Agency of Ag Issues Reminder to Farmers: Winter Manure Spreading Ban Begins December 15th
Winter requires farmers to operate with great care and also abide by season-specific rules.
