VHCB Awards $5.2 Million to Create and Rehabilitate Affordable Housing and Conserve Farmland, Recreational Access and Forestland
June 29, 2015 MONTPELIER - The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board (VHCB) announced grants today totaling $5,215,623 to develop and rehabilitate 216 affordable homes, to protect 377 acres of agricultural land on three farms, to conserve 340 acres of forest land in the towns of Pownal, Shrewsbury and Mendon, and to provide permanent public access to a swimming hole in Johnson.

Edge-of-field monitoring assistance for Lake Champlain Basin Farmers-Apply by July 24th
USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is making available $2 million to interested farmers to help install voluntary edge-of-field monitoring stations on agricultural lands in eight states, including Vermont. The application deadline is July 24, 2015. Farmers in Lake Champlain basin encouraged to apply.

Sterling College Helps Veterans Launch Farms with $10,000 Grants Upon Graduation
Building on the growing interest of veterans in farming at a time when the Department of Labor reports that the nation’s farmers are nearing retirement with an average age of 56, Sterling College has announced the creation of the Veteran College-to-Farm Program. Sterling was among the first institutions in the United States to focus on sustainable practices in agriculture and, starting this fall, veterans that complete a degree in Sustainable Agriculture or Sustainable Food Systems at the Vermont college will receive a $10,000 grant to launch a farm or food business.

Vermont Food Education Every Day Expands Farm to School Institute Regionally
For the first time, Vermont FEED is expanding its pioneering Farm to School Institute to school teams from across New England and New York.Thirteen teams have recently been selected to participate, thanks to funding from a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm to School grant. While Congress debates whether schools should serve more whole grains and lower sodium, Vermont and Northeast schools are serving healthy and local foods while simultaneously engaging students in learning and taking action on food, farms and nutrition.

VHCB Awards $3.08 Million to to Conserve Farmland, Recreational Access and Forestland
In one of two meetings annually to consider applications for the conservation of farmland, the Vermont Land Trust worked with 15 farms around the state to put together the conservation deals approved by the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board. Grant commitments for land conservation projects with public trails were made to the Town of Williston, the Trust for Public Lands and Kingdom Trails. UVM and Vermont Law School Present 4th Annual Food Systems Summit June 16-17
UVM is partnering with Vermont Law School’s Center for Agriculture and Food Systems to host the fourth annual UVM Food Systems Summit. The theme of the Summit is The Right to Food: Power, Policy and Politics in the 21st century, and an estimated 300 people are expected to attend.
