Chapter 2: Goals & Data

Goal 22: Food system enterprises will minimize their use of fossil fuels and maximize their renewable energy, energy efficiency, and conservation opportunities.

Food system activities consume a lot of energy and energy costs are a major concern for farmers, processors, distributors, and consumers. But food system businesses can also generate a significant portion of Vermont's renewable energy needs.

What kinds of opportunities for energy efficiency and renewable energy generation are possible? What does the data show? It would appear to be the case that the Coventry Landfill is currently the largest renewable energy generating site, with 8 MW of landfill methane and 2.2 MW of solar PV electricity generating capacity, followed by Georgia Mountain Maples, a 4 turbine 10-megawatt electricity generating site. Vermont has at least 19 anaerobic digesters and many food system businesses have solar photovoltaic installations, including the emergence of several "solar farms."
