Description

The UVM Paul Miller Research Complex is hiring a full time Farm Operations Support Specialist to help with oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Miller Farm. This position has a specific focus on supporting the Miller Farm’s dairy operation and works collaboratively with the Head Herdsman and the Field and Farmyard specialist. Duties include maintaining the grounds, helping promote a safe and healthy work, learning, and research environment for the university and visitors to the farm. This position also provides support to UVM CREAM students during moving animals between barn and milking parlor, oversight of milking practices and procedures, feeding, animal health checks, and barn cleaning, and works collaboratively with other members of the Miller Farm Staff to ensure farm operations run smoothly.

Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of heavy equipment operation, including farm tractors, front-end loaders, skid steers, and experience pulling trailers, wagons, and farm implements using 3-point hitch, drawbar, and power take-off. 1-3 years of experience working with Dairy cows, and comfort working around large breed animals.

Initial employment is contingent upon successful completion of physical screening and a background check. Must be able to work independently to complete scheduled activities. Must have a valid Vermont driver’s license or the ability to obtain. Ability to lift 35 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally. Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications: Experience working with large animals in a farm environment, in particular on dairies or equine operations. Experience working with college students in an academic environment is also desirable. General understanding of farm equipment maintenance, or a willingness to learn, to become an expert in general equipment maintenance and repair.

Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Pay Range - Pay rate is $20-24/hour

Full time position working 40 hours per week, with some possible overtime.
