Agritourism
The Agritourism Task Force formed in 2013 to advance Vermont’s culinary and agriculture tourism industry and communicate Vermont’s agricultural story. The task force includes both statewide and sub-state regional organizations. The task force developed its main purposes and objectives, which include:
- Serve as a resource for agriculture businesses interested in developing agritourism assets
- Function as a community of practice -- a space for practitioners to share, communicate, and offer opportunities for professional development
- Identify initiatives to advance the work of Farm to Plate through consumer education and agritourism
- Develop a referral network for those involved in agritourism
- Conduct some strategic planning for the agritourism industry
- Coordinate with the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing on how we market Vermont
- Interact and connect with Agriculture and Culinary Tourism Council and assist with Dig In Vermont website outreach

I manage the Vermont Tourism Network (a program of the Vermont Chamber) and promote group travel to Vermont in partnership with the Vermont Dept of Tourism & Marketing. I represent more than 100 destinations in Vermont, including numerous agritourism destinations, and work with tour operators and planners to develop tours (mostly via motorcoach and 25-35 guests). The tour industry appreciates Vermont's authenticity and I'm always working to develop new itineraries and experiences to share. I am also President of the Vermont Attractions Association representing and promoting Vermont's attractions which also includes many agricultural destinations.

Lindsey spent seven years in marketing, advertising and PR in the private sector, and in 2011 escaped the cubicles of New York City to found herself nestled in the vines of Mendoza’s wine country as a harvest intern. What was meant to be a five month hiatus became a four year journey around Latin America, Australia and New Zealand. A life-changing role at a Peruvian disaster relief organization convinced Lindsey to continue working in the non-profit sector, and a few stints with a Guatemalan coffee cooperative, an Australian organic farm and various WWOOFing properties, locked her into the good food movement for good. Lindsey and her partner Matthew founded a food education tourism project, Origins of Food, that reconnects people with where food comes from.

Happy Bird Poultry Farm, LLC started as two couples growing their own chicken. One year we (The Boyles) gave some of our homegrown chicken as gifts for Christmas and WOW! It was popular so we grew more and more each year. Then we added the smokehouse and farm market. We now offer a diverse variety of local food and non food items for sale. Our chicken is still grown here on the farm and is now (as of 2017) processed by us in our on farm VT Department of Agriculture inspected poultry processing plant. We aren't a deli or restaurant but we do offer some awesome foods for you to take home and share with family and friends. Real smoke, real flavor, low and slow!

My buddy Jesse and I make it our mission to bring in a new level of sustainability to mushroom production by eliminating the use of non-recyclable plastic and lowering our energy use by utilizing inovative sterilization techniques. We are in the design stages of integrating mushroom production into a permaculture-based perrenial gardern.

Orly is the founder and executive director of Strolling of the Heifers. Drawing on her 20-year background as an educational consultant, she gathered a group of volunteers in 2001 to help focus attention on the difficulties of small family farms in the Brattleboro region. In 2002, they organized the first annual Strolling of the Heifers, a parade and festival celebrating farmers and aiming to connect people with healthy local food. With the growth in the local foods movement since then, “the Stroll” has expanded to a full weekend which is annually rated one of Vermont’s Top Ten Summer Events (and in 2013 was rated one of America’s Top 10 Summer Festivals). Under Orly’s leadership, over the years Strolling of the Heifers launched educational programs, a microloan fund, and farm internship program for youth, which are now all carried on by other organizations. In 2011, the Slow Living Summit was added, immediately preceding Stroll Weekend. Strolling of the Heifers also currently organizes the Vermont Farm/Food Business Plan Competition in collaboration with Vermont Technical College.

Tigertown Farm is an off-grid, experimental homestead developing low cost and low energy input strategies for regenerating a tired piece of land in our Vermont landscape. Through permaculture system design, building with reclaimed construction materials, and agro-ecological farming practices, we seek to relearn how to live and sustain ourselves within a greater working ecosystem. Our enterprises include Tigertown Compost, which annually diverts tens of thousands of pounds of restaurant organic material from landfills each year and doesn't stop there. We aim at achieving highest use from all materials put through our system- feeding pigs, chickens, fungi and the soil! Additionally, nearly all of our and our guests' diet comes from our farm and woodlands. Specifically, from foraging, hunting, raising heritage pigs and birds, organic culinary mushroom production, the biodynamic orchards, sugar bush as well as a diverse and resilient rotation of annual veggies which share our 30 acre farm. We are 100% off grid, which means we source all of our own water, and electricity from our gravity well and solar panel array. We offer free room and board homestead immersion experiences to travelers from around the globe.

We are a small diversified livestock farm that raises pgs, sheep and chickens on pastures. We use rotational plans to use our animals' natural instincts to manage and improve our soil. The farm is run by two italians, Alessandra and Stefano, that are passionate about preserving their heritage and keep up with modern knowledge about sustainable agriculture. Our small farming community of 5 adults and 1 child lives and works on the farm which was built in 1850s and is spread over 60 acres, just a hop away from lake champlain. We also have started raising, ducks, bees and have a new hoop house for vegetables and herbs, In addition, we have acres and acres of wild edibles that our land gifts us every season. We do all the processing of the meat ourselves and we share the bounty of the land with guests that come to visit once a month for a luxurious 5 to 8 course Italian feast. Our latest project is the construction of a facility to create Italian style salumi, such as salame, prosciutto, coppa etc.

As Executive Director of Newport City Renaissance Corporation I have developed the Newport. Fresh by Nature. program that has received start-up funds from USDA-RD Rural Business Enterprise Grant. The program connects local farms to downtown restaurants and markets restaurants that include and increase the amount of locally grown and produced ingredients on their menus. The annual Taste of Newport event is a walking tour of downtown Newport visiting the participating restaurants and tasting their menu selections made of seasonally fresh ingredients. Newport. Fresh by Nature. also celebrates Newport's community gardens and promotes the Newport Farmer's Market and Northeast Kingdom Tasting Center. Marketing downtown Newport as a culinary destination for a true farm-to-table experience and job creation are major goals of this program. Green Mountain Farm Direct is a partner in this program.

For the past three years, we have been operating under the name, Tomorrow's Harvest (you may have heard of us!). Due to the demand for our products, we have spent the last year working on expanding. Enter: a bigger farm, a new name, a pretty awesome logo and a really innovative team of do-ers and creative thinkers (among other stuff).

I currently work for UVM Extension Agricultural Business program, focusing on business planning support for farm viability, clean water, and general agricultural business initiatives. I have been working in the fields of rural economic development, regenerative agriculture, water sanitation, and social entrepreneurship in a variety of capacities ever since my Peace Corps Volunteer experience began in Ecuador in 2005. I am particularly interested in supporting the agricultural communities of Vermont and Latin America. My ambition to continue to work in agriculture comes from my first job at 12 years old on a farm in Ohio, through several years working in greenhouse agriculture, to starting organic tomato and chicken enterprises in Ecuador and Guatemala. Prior to joining the UVM team, I was a digital marketing consultant for a variety of companies and I continue to support farmers in joining the digital economy.

About Us: Our farms are special because of the people who work there, the animals we caretake, and the town where we are located. Sure we have, in our opinion, some of the best genetic lines of Wagyu and Berkshire, but the real reason our end product is better is the environment within which these animals are raised. Our farmers are a mixture of local Vermonters, New Englanders, and former urban dwellers who sought out a more bucolic way of life. What they all have in common is their passion for the land, the animals, and farming as a way of life not just a way to make a living. Our farmers work in concert with each other while each individual is able to focus on specific areas of the farm that he or she is uniquely qualified to manage. We believe producing quality meat can only be achieved if we produce superb crops, manage pastures for optimum nutrition, and maintain all farm buildings to ensure animals comfort and health. Our animals are unique for a myriad of reasons. Obviously our Wagyu Cattle, Mangalitsa and Berkshire Pork have unique traits which make our end product unique. Our customers include some of the highest rated restaurants in New England. Our goal is to raise exceptional meats. Our land is situated in Royalton Vermont and offers some of the best agricultural lands in the prettiest setting. We are situated in a community where farming isn’t a novelty but rather a family tradition. We are lucky to be able to rely on our neighbors who also farm and enjoy the sense of community we feel when we are able to work together to produce healthy foods for our family, friends, and business partners. This is what makes our farm special. Please contact us today to discuss the possibility of joining our team. This isn’t just a business, this is our home.
