Connecting Growers with City Government:
How New Orleans’s Urban Agriculture Liaison Supports Farmers and Helps the City Prioritize Urban Food Production
A new CAFS case study tells the story of how New Orleans farmers, gardeners, and community organizations worked together to get the city to pass a resolution that created its first urban agriculture liaison position. Co-authored by Liz Turner, visiting assistant professor at Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS), and former CAFS intern Seth Israel, this case study illustrates the significance of a dedicated point of contact within city government that can both provide technical assistance to farmers and keep urban agriculture a government priority through programming and policy development.
The case study is part of a CAFS project supported by the USDA Office of Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production that identifies policy strategies to support policymakers and food producers working to strengthen local food production in U.S. cities.
