Conservation Districts Seek Supervisors

Do you want to serve your community? Are you passionate about the future of Vermont’s working landscape? Vermont’s Natural Resources Conservation Districts (NRCDs) are looking for individuals to sit on their Board of Supervisors.

What are NRCDs? NRCDs are units of local government that were established in 1939 by Vermont’s Soil Conservation Act. They connect people, organizations, and resources to steward our land and water for the future. Each of Vermont’s 14 NRCDs are run by a Board of Supervisors which provides direction, leadership, and guidance to the District Manager.

What does being a Supervisor entail?

  • Serve for a term of 5 years, typically beginning in January
  • Attend District Board meetings, usually monthly
  • Bring valuable local perspective to the natural resources conservation planning process

Districts benefit from the range of experience provided by their Board of Supervisors. Experience in farming, forestry, water quality, invasive species, flood mitigation, community building, fundraising, and organizational management are just some of the skills and backgrounds sought by Districts as they grow to meet the needs of Vermont communities.

Supervisors are supported in their service by their District Manager, the State Natural Resources Conservation Council, and the Vermont Association of Conservation Districts. Supervisors serve on a volunteer basis, but are eligible for per diem and reimbursement of expenses incurred in the course of meeting attendance or other District work.

How can you become a Supervisor? To have your name placed on an upcoming election ballot for the office of Supervisor, you must secure a minimum of twenty-five (25) signatures from local landowners on nominating petitions, available from your local district. Supervisors must reside within the boundaries of their district and cannot be current federal employees.
