Food Safety Modernization Act Upcoming Webinar – Commenting Made Easy

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) will conduct a webinar on November 4th from 12-1pm that will walk participants through the comment process for the Produce Safety and Preventive Control Rules. The deadline for making comments on the FDA’s proposed rules to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is November 15.

Sterling College Launches the Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems

Today, Sterling College announced the launch of The Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems.

The Center, named for the late founder of Clean Yield Group Inc. and a Sterling College trustee, will be the centerpiece of the College’s nationally known Sustainable Agriculture program. The facility will encompass new and improved farm and draft horse instructional spaces, including new construction and renovation of existing structures.

President Matthew Derr said, “I loved working with Rian; he was a wonderful person and a gifted Trustee, whose loss will be felt for years to come. The Fried Center will continue his mission to transform the local economy and to Sterling College’s curriculum so we can continue to be a boot camp for a revolution in the stewardship of our food system.”

Working Lands Enterprise Board Announces the Release of Available Poultry Processing Grant Funds

The Working Lands Enterprise Board announces the availability of $40,000 in grant funds for investment into VT poultry processing projects. Applications received must be for the construction of a mobile or fixed, commercially inspected (state or federal) poultry slaughter and/or processing facility. With strong justification, a mobile facility operating under the 20,000 bird exemption would be considered.

Shelburne Farms Event Brings Together Farms, Educators, and Tourism Enterprises

The historic barns, hillsides dotted with cows, and steaming sugar houses of Vermont's working landscape have been iconic images of the state for many years. Increasingly, visitors want to do more than drive by these pastoral images. They want to roll up their sleeves, milk a cow, dig potatoes, and learn more about the food system with all five senses. On October 22 and 23, the Farm-Based Education Network and Vermont Farms! Association are collaborating with the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont, Shelburne Farms, and University of Vermont Extension to offer the Farm-Based Education Forum: Agritourism, Education and Economics on Your Farm.
